Star’s Football Family-

Happy Holidays to all and heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS! We made it! I am always proud of our students and staff at the end of each semester and year. It is really an amazing thing when a group of people of all ages and backgrounds come together for a common purpose and are able to see it through its completion. However, this particular semester, much like this entire year will be placed in its own category.  As we close the books on 2020 and enter into the new year we can only hope that better days are ahead and life as we once knew it returns to normal.  During this holiday season, I want to wish your family the very best. I hope you can find some time to rest and relax. Get away from the doom and gloom and focus on the light of our lives, which is family.

Reflect

Inevitably the end of the year is a time to reflect and think about the good, bad, and indifferent.  On the surface, 2020 will go down as the worst of years. For me personally, the anxiety and fear of the unknown have been extremely difficult to navigate through. I lost one of my dearest friends to suicide and all the while my entire lively hood has been put on hold.  It feels, on the surface, that everything has been taken away. However, if I dig a little deeper and I find that while so much has been taken out of my life, the void left has allowed me to fill it with other hidden gems. The ability to spend time with my daughters at such a formidable age has been a blessing. The opportunity to reflect on who I am as a person and how I want to lead has provided me with a blueprint for the future of this program. But, what I am most proud of is the opportunity to learn from our players about true perseverance.  These young men and women have had it all taken away from them. In a time when they have every reason to quit they have found the inner strength to keep going and continue to forge ahead. It is their GRIT and energy that has fueled my soul. I love these kids, each and every one of them. They hold a place in my heart and impact my life far greater than I will ever impact theirs.

“Sometimes life takes something away from you to make room for something better.”

The Plan

In the coming weeks, the IHSA and IDHP will be meeting to discuss the outline of the 2021 athletics plan. While everything is currently up in the air, I can assure you that I will be working for our players and parents to provide the best possible experience. I fully believe that we will have a 21 spring season.  With that said,  our parent group 4th Phase/Cover 4 Hospitality Group will begin moving forward with the plans for our 2021 spring campaign. While there is a lot that still remains unclear, we will be working to create an ELITE experience for all parents, players, and community members. Please be on the lookout for correspondences coming from both groups in the near future. It takes a village to run this football program and we will be calling on all of you to come and be a part of the mission, vision, and purpose.  If you are interested in being on a committee please contact Trisha Sharkey at tshark3@gmail.com .

Coach’s Message

12.6-12.12

Star’s Football Family-

I am writing this just after watching the Bears completely implode and drop yet another game to the lowly Lions. Being that my wife is born and raised in Detriot this one hurts just a little more and I will now be on laundry duty all week. With that said I will keep this short so I can begin on the darks.

The Recipe

As a head coach, one of my favorite topics of study and research is sustained success. Anybody can win once but how do programs stay on top and sustain the elite level of success.  In this program, we have been fortunate to achieve a consistent level of quantifiable success. Conference championships, state playoff opportunities and consistently being ranked in the top 25 in the state has become the norm. I have always been proud of how our program continues to improve. Some may be saying that we didn’t improve last year and I beg to differ. We never attach ourselves to the wins or losses. Instead we attach ourselves to the journey and I can honestly say that our program got better because of the lessons learned during the season last year. It is evident everyday our players continue to persevere through this ordeal. The have gotten back to the recipe of what it takes to be a champion and there is no cutting corners.  A loss is never who you are and it is important to not identify with the good or bad that may happen on the playing field. In that same ideology our players have not attached themselves to the outside chatter that covid has brought. On the contrary, they have shown laser focus in their preparation and continue to show why being a North Star football players is so special. Thank you ! With this said I ask that we continue to support our kids and share in the mission, vision and purpose of our program.  Let the message be consistent in their ears that we will continue to invest, prepare, be accountable and selfless. Most importantly let us remind them to lead where their feet are.

The Plan

Star’s Football Family-

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

I want to take this opportunity to express my hope that you get a moment to relax and enjoy a special time with your family this week.  I know this year we have seen ALOT of our families but it is always a little more special on the holidays.  As we continue to navigate through 2020’s unrelenting onslaught of uncertainty, I want to express my gratitude to all of you.  Your support and encouragement throughout this ordeal have been a wonderful representation of what being an Iron Star is all about.

In our program, we live by our credo of “Iron Star Football”.  The Iron Star was developed by our 2013 team and my 1st team as a head coach. It was created to serve as our guiding light for the behaviors we will support and develop within our program.  Each and every day the message of the program is built around these pillars of behavior.

As we enter this new phase of this journey, there is a level of belief that we all need to have. Sometimes we have to believe even when the odds are against us. As we say:

“A group of people with a shared belief  can become an unstoppable force. Belief is a force multiplier…an ignitor”

When the chips are down we need to fall back on the values that make us who are we. We can all find a way to make our Iron Star values applicable to our lives.  Stay strong, have a purpose, and share your light.

Coach’s Message

11.16-11.21

Star’s Football Family-

A good evening/morning or afternoon,

I hope this message finds you doing well.  I understand how challenging the past two weeks have been for many of our families. The virus has affected us all on many levels and to those who have to deal with it in their home please know that my thoughts for your health and safety are constant.  We found out Monday that my mother-in-law had come down with the virus. While she did struggle early on she has battled back and is doing well at this time. I can only say the stress, anxiousness, and fear is real. As a reminder to our entire football family let us please stick together through these tough times. We are here for each other through thick and thin. I am here for all of you if ever need anything please do not hesitate to reach out.

GRIT

With our kids, we have spent much of this months focus on the word  “Grit”. For many years, I thought “grit” was just coaches speak. I never fully understood it nor did I want to believe in something that mythical. I tend to lean toward a more tangible rationale. However, over the last few months, I have taken a harder look at what “Grit” is and isn’t.

  • Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals.
  • Grit isn’t talent. Grit isn’t luck. Grit isn’t how intensely, for the moment, you want something.
  • Instead, grit is about having what some researchers call an”ultimate concern”–

Grit

“ A goal you care about so much that it organizes and gives meaning to almost everything you do. And grit is holding steadfast to that goal. Even when you fall down. Even when you screw up. Even when progress toward that goal is halting or slow.”

This whole experience has been a battle of will and perseverance. It is so easy to quit and give up because our goal keeps getting put into question.  We often talk to our kids about leading…even when it is hard. Well,  I have to say that our players have shown me that grit can become 3 dimensional. They have shown it to me through their effort in all aspects of their life.  Never in my life have I been prouder of a group of young men and women.

I know it is difficult to navigate much of what is going on with the virus, school, holidays, and the question mark of the season hanging over us. With that said, I will continue to present our plan to prepare for the Feb ‘21 season. As distracting as this all is I find the thought of playing our season a great horizon line to pull me through. I hope you feel the same way.  As we transition into the “Winter Pre Season” there is much work to be done and the next two months will be gone in a blink of an eye.  As we said last week.

“Enjoy the journey because the destination is a mirage.”
