Star’s Football Family-

My apologies for getting the newsletter out a little late. I hope your family is well and enjoying the first glimpses of fall. Fall has always been my favorite season for many reasons. Something about the crisp air and smell of leaves that conjures up many fond memories I have from this time of year. Unfortunately, this year we are missing something we all love. The laughs, tears, and roller coaster of emotions that football brings have been put on hold. In its place are uncertainties, inconsistencies, and political rhetoric that no high schooler should have to endure. For the past month, our coaches association has been working hard to establish our movement to have the fall season reinstated. This weekend saw thousands of parents and athletes rally to support the Let Us Play movement. I want to thank those who have taken the time to lead the charge. I appreciate the energy, commitment, and emotional resources that you have invested to keep pushing forward.

As the leader of our program, I share in your vision of a brighter future. I want to see our players out on the field. I want to see our helmets held high and hear the roar of the crowd! We are in this together and together we can navigate our kids through this.

I have to admit there is much to think about but I continue to focus on the essentials. That is YOU! It is the mission of our program to provide our families with a great experience. I have repeatedly had to remind myself to

Do what you can .

With what you have

When you can.

In a world where it is easy to focus on what we do not have,  I choose to focus on what we do have and what we can accomplish. Right now we can have contact days. In order to do this, we have to establish the safest environment we can each and every day. This requires a level of preparation and accountability by all of us to do our part.  We have over 110 players who are investing time each week into their personal development. They come with a passion and energy that uplifts everyone on the field.  We have coaches and players who are volunteering their time to help build their team. It is humbling to see such selflessness on display. Finally, we have parents who are leading their families through very difficult times with grace and dignity. They have supported our program and I am eternally grateful. In short, there is so much to be thankful for. I know that for some this is of little consolation, but it has to be highlighted.

Star’s Football Family-

I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding over the past few weeks. It has been a long road but with every passing day we get closer to achieving our goal and that is playing football this year.  This past week we battle the weather but I am happy to say that we were able to get all of our levels on the stadium at least once. Thank you to our varsity for exhibiting a selfless attitude and giving up their stadium practice so that our lower levels could get the experience under the lights. It is that type of selflessness that will only strengthen the team’s culture. Getting to watch the frosh and soph afforded me the opportunity to truly just be an observer. I have to say I loved what I saw. Kudos to our coaches for providing a safe learning environment. I was also equally impressed with the depth of coaching that I witnessed. Our players were locked in and playing fast. Again, just a tribute to the investment and preparation of all our players, parents, and staff have exhibited. As I have said before our program is built on 5 simple values.

These are our behaviors that win and the expectation is that each of us displays the leadership needed to be successful. In our world there is no gray area, everything comes back to these pillars.

As we move into week 2 of our contact period I look forward to each and every minute we get. Our program will continue to support your children and provide them with an elite experience. There are some important announcements so please read through the entire newsletter.

Star’s Football Family-

This is not a test… I repeat this is not a test! We are two nights of sleep away from our fall contact beginning and I am PUMPED! While it is not what we all wanted for the fall, we cannot deny the opportunity that is in front of us. This is our chance to show our response to adversity. How exciting is that prospect? When everyone else is going to be complaining that we are not playing our program will be showing that the games are only a fraction of what makes football special. As I said in my earlier newsletter no amount of adversity no matter how big or small will ever deter our program away from the M.V.P. Our mission, vision, and purpose in the  SCN football family is more than just football. We will connect with our families and communities. We will provide our players with an elite experience. This is my word to you. Now I do have a favor to ask. Let us all put our differences aside and align our purpose towards the common goal of providing the support, love, and positivity that we all so desperately need during these times. We can find our peace together. I believe this.

Star’s Football Family-

I hope this letter finds your family safe and well.  What a wild ride 2020 continues to take us on. This week was a rollercoaster of emotions for sure! First, we all deserve a pat on the back for navigating the waters of our first full week. I am so proud of our students, parents and teachers. This is truly a team effort and it is a great example of when we all work together we can accomplish amazing things. Wednesday night was a program highlight. Thank you to our Cover 4 and all of thed families who attended the College Recruiting During Covid presentation by Clint Cosgrove. His insight was spot on and the Q and A to follow was a great learning experience. Thursday we received word that our Fall Contact Days passed through the district! This means we will have fall football, sort of. So all in all a great week, with one slight hiccup.

“Friday Night Lights”

I think Ron Burgundy said it best in Anchorman. “I am in a glass case of emotion.” This past Friday was a learning experience and one that forced me to come to terms with the reality of the current situation.  Over the last 20 years football has been woven into the tapestry of my families life. Every birthday, vacation and even wedding dates have been worked around football. Needless to say, this past Friday was different. I  wouldn’t say worse or better just different. There was a tangible emptiness that I felt and while I thought I was going to be alright with it, honestly I was not.  I have done a lot in my 42 years and been blessed to experience a lot really cool things but nothing and I mean nothing compares to the feelings that come out on a Friday night.  I am sure many of you felt the same way as I did. Now the real question comes up.

“How do we respond?”

My answer to this question is to build my world around the moment and what I  have as opposed to what I should have. It is easy to wish and hope but I have learned that wishing and hoping is not an effective strategy. As we navigate through these rough waters together I ask that we share in this mission and vision. Let us be the one common voice that our children get to hear. Let our unified voice be louder than all the fear, negativity and uncertainty.

Star’s Football Family-

Coach’s Message

Congratulations to each and every one of us on making through the first week of school. Pretty sure I was an elephant short of a 3 ring circus! Never-the-less we made it and with each passing day we will only improve our opportunities as we all learn to navigate the new educational climate. This reminds me of the often used anecdote

“Smoother waters ahead..”

In this particular situation it takes on great meaning. My mentor and program friend, Jim Bloch always tell me that during a moment of great change the waters will be rough. The important thing is to keep your eyes on the horizon and keep moving forward. There are smoother waters ahead.  I cannot wait to see what is just over our the horizon for this program.

I want to extend a thank you to all of our parents and players. The leadership you have exhibited these past months has been inspiring. The level of investment, selflessness and accountability that is on display on a day to day basis is humbling. The bar is set so high but upheld by so many ELITE people.

As the leader of our program I am challenged to be better because our young men and women have an insatiable hunger to get better. As we say

MOVE THE NEEDLE

The competitive cauldron that is being created by our players is going forge this group into an indestructible weapon! There is no replacement for competitive excellence.
