Quarter 2 March 9th – March 15th
Hello! So I think we can safely say that this newsletter is the reason for the great weather. It is hard to deny the correlation. I hope this message finds your families doing well and enjoying this taste of spring.
I am sure you are all reading the headlines and having to process what is happening in the world right now. So much information coming in at such a high rate can flood the cognitive system. It is hard to sift through what is factual and what is sensationalized. In short, it is difficult to know what and who to trust. As a parent I find it challenging to navigate my concern for my family and keeping life status quo for my children. I appreciate the efforts that you make to give your families the best and protect them daily. I wish for your family’s health and peace during this time.
TRUST
Every year, I spend the months of December through May studying leadership, team building and cultural dynamics. I have a passion for researching what attributes makes teams go from good to great and what behaviors allow programs to attain sustained success. The dynamics of a great business or team are not all that different. Trust is the foundation that all relationships are built on. It is the thread that holds together the fabric of every relationship we have. As we move into the beginning of the 2nd quarter of our performance development program it is essential to reaffirm how the St. Charles North Football Club works to define, develop and earn trust.
Trust by definition is vague, it has soft edges that can be manipulated to fit many molds. In the SCN Football program we want to provide clarity to our stakeholders and define trust as being comprised by the following buckets.
Character: ethical trust
Competence: technical trust
Connection: personal trust
The ideology of trust not being given but earned is a common theme within our program. Every experience we give is going to either strengthen or weaken the bond of trust. In order to truly build trust we must give consistent, repeated positive experiences.
As the head coach, it is my job to earn every stakeholders trust in our program. I learned from a great mentor of mine the following.
“Earn their trust ! Don’t assume because you have the title of head coach that trust will follow. Trust is earned/ lost through every experience you give that person.”
Character
At the core of St. Charles North football is our character development program. Iron Star football is built on the behaviors of being a leader , accountable, selfless, prepared and invested. As the head coach I must show our players what being a person of character looks like. Our players will remember what we did as coaches long after they forgot what was said. I want our players to see me as a father, a husband, a brother , a son and a coach. They need to understand that character is not just a sometimes thing it is an all the time thing. We show our players the way and remind them that character is fragile. You can spend your whole life building your character and one bad decision can ruin it.
For our players we want to clearly define what character looks like within our program. As a parent/ family I encourage you to think about how the experience you give in our program can represent our values.
Competence
The New England Patriots and Bill Belichick live by one simple motto “Do Your Job”. Regardless of your title, each constituent is in charge of doing their job to the highest level. In our program we define competence in the following ways.
- Knowledge – know your scheme’s
- Skills – execute your duties with elite detail
- Attitudes- be a positive influence
- Personal Character – be passionate not emotional
In my opinion anyone can “do their job” but only the best can understand and execute their job with elite detail. That is the difference between good and great. The good do their job while the great do their job with unprecedented attention to the finite details. In the St. Charles North Football program we lay the expectations out to our players on what competence should like as it relates to our value system.
I recently gave a speech at a clinic talking about trust and competence. As the head coach one would assume that X and O competence is a given. (insert head coach joke here) For me, I look at competence as the ability to show that I am worthy of coaching your son’s or daughter’s. You see, different aspects of the trust paradigm weigh differently for specific groups of people. As a parent, you are allowing me access to your most prized possessions. It is my job to earn your trust by proving that I am competent in having a hand in their development as an athlete, student and person when they are not under your roof. I view this as a HUGE responsibility and it has formed the basis for much of our program philosophies.
CONNECTION
In the physical world connections are used all around us. The light switch that creates energy to your house, the transfer on the tollway that allows you to travel the country and even your smart phone that keeps you tethered to your social circle. Emotionally, some say that connections are the single most influential factor into the success of a unit. A strong connection can be life changing. It is the reason why many of us got married and started a family. When we connect with someone you make an emotional investment into them. For many of us making a strong connection can be difficult. It requires us to get out of our comfort zones and have a willingness to become somewhat vulnerable. When we connect we give up a little control and for guys like me that is scary (insert type A personality joke here). On the flip side a family, team or program that is connected can be an unstoppable force. Think of it like a water hose. When the hose is laid out straight the water is allowed to flow with power and a great amount of force. However, if one part of the hose is kinked the connection is not as strong. The water will still figure out a way to flow but without as much power as before. Take it a step further and if the water is impeded entirely and the connection is cut off, the results can be catastrophic. My job in this program is two fold
- Connect our key stakeholders through a common mission, vision and purpose through shared experiences. .
- Look for kinks in the hose and address them before it blows up in our face.
Simple Math
Addition/ Subtraction/Divider/ Multiplier
A great coach in our program Pat Shannon explains connection in simple terms. He says that we can play 1 of 4 roles in our program. You can be a connector and add value to everyone in our program. Some may choose to talk negatively and in turn subtract from the program’s value. Others may choose to divide the program and create cliques by only connecting with those who share similar perspectives. Finally, and what I hope we all can work to become, is a multiplier. A multiplier is a catalyst of positive connections. They believe in the program’s mission and pass it along to anyone who wants to be a part of it. Multipliers create the greatest impact in any business or program. Unfortunately, the multipliers are also the hardest to find.
I am excited to begin this second chapter of our 2020 season. To our athletes who are in spring sports, be the best version of you. Bring your standards into that program and hold others to them. To everyone else, the program never stops. There is always something that can keep you connected. Seek them out and invest your most treasured commodity. TIME!

SUMMER CAMP LIST
This year we will have the usual camps listed below .
*June 1st- 4th is designated for youth and individual skills camps.
* We have added a new camp opportunity. June 6th – July 30th we will be running a separate strength & conditioning class. Bryce Biel of Legacy Performance and his staff along with our Staff will be running a 75 minute strength & speed session M-R. Camp times will vary from June to July. The availability of this camp will allow us to separate our football and strength development. While this is an extra cost, the development to the athlete is well worth it in my opinion. Prices have yet to be released but I can assure you it will come down to less than 10 dollars a session which is well below Bryce’s usual cost. We took this step as the logical progression in our program’s development. We have always felt that our strength development conflicted with our football development in the summer. This will alleviate that problem. Additionally, we start official football camp on June 22nd. From June 1st – June 18th we will be having OTA (organized team activities) film and scheme sessions from 6pm – 8pm. These are non padded classroom based sessions. A full curriculum is being developed to better prepare our athletes cognitively for the summer installs. Again we feel this aligns more consistently with our 4 quadrant development model. There will not be a camp sign up as these opportunities are free of charge.

Word of the Week: RECOMMIT
Another newsletter and another 60 degree day. I am not going to take all the credit for the weather correlating with our weekly correspondence but it is hard to deny the connection! March is here and spring is in the air. Goodluck to all of our athletes who are trying out for a spring sport. Any time you extend yourself and put your fate in someone else’s hands it can be difficult.Anytime we lack control of the outcome of a particular situation, we must fall back on our training stay true to our beliefs. Believe me, as a professional baseball player and coach for over 10 years there was nothing harder than trying out and nothing more gut wrenching then having to tell a player they did not make the team. I wish your family the best of luck and if it does not go your way it is not the end. It is okay to be disappointed, sad or even a bit angry. Just remember that you are being tested and your response to that event will determine the outcome. I encourage you to keep your head up and recommit to being the best version of yourself.
COMMITMENT
Now that we are a few months into the new year I believe it is appropriate to talk about the many commitments we make as a person. The new year brings new goals and changes that you want to make to become a better version of yourself. With these commitments comes the work that must be invested in order to accomplish them. If you are anything like me, by now those shiny new goals that you made in January have begun to gather some rust and become less important in the hierarchy of parenthood, career, home duties and the plethora of other roles we have in our lives. The excitement of tackling a new goal has waned and it just seems harder. Seems like a perfect time to RECOMMIT!
RECOMMIT x 1000
As the head coach of this program I see my role as the hub of a wheel whose job is to connect the program to every player, parent and community member who wants to be a part of our mission. That is my commitment to you in our football family. I have to be honest, being a head football coach is the hardest job I have ever had and probably will ever have. If I always look at the big picture and my initial commitment I don’t feel like I would be able to accomplish the goal that has been set. However, I learned a long time ago
“it is not the initial commitment that will make you great but the hundreds and thousands of recommitments you must make to achieve your goal”
I teach our players that there is no secret to success or to achieve any goal. There are no guarantees that even if you put in the work that you will be rewarded. However, I do know that if you do follow these 3 simple rules your chances will be much improved.
- Work the process
- Invest the time
- Solve the problems along the way.
Let’s unpack these to gain a better understanding.
- Work the process and no I don’t mean “The Process”. I am referring to your process of achieving your goals. It will not be clean and at times it will be downright messy but it is essential to recommit each and every day to your process regardless of the outcome from the day before. For example, we did not achieve our goals last year as a team but that will not deter our recommitment to our process. If anything, failures and setbacks only help us grow in the long run.
- Invest the time ….even when it’s hard! We all know how easy it can be to make excuses as to why we cannot. I implore you that in those moments you make a focused recommitment to your plan and push through.
“ Success is the result of the cumulative impact of daily actions repeated over time. Have relentless focus and effort.”
- Solve problems along the way because there will be problems. Please think back to the last time you ever set a goal for yourself and achieved it. Now reverse engineer that moment. What problems did you have to navigate through? What variables changed that you didn’t expect to? Life, much like football, is about the ability to make adjustments. You may fail along the way and that is okay.
“ Never listen to the quitter.”
Finally, as we close out I will leave you with this. In our lives we have moments that define us. For me it was leaving my old job in a great district and giving up tenure to become a head coach. That was a hard thing to do on many levels, it was a risk. I had a new home, was a new dad and a first time head coach. There were many moments when I questioned myself and my belief in ME! About midway through my first season I had a moment that will define me for the rest of my life. The team was doing well but I wasn’t being the coach I wanted to be. I would go home feeling empty and felt that I was failing. It took a great conversation with a good friend to realize that I was being the coach that I thought I should be but not the coach I needed to be for me. At that moment I made a commitment to myself. If I am going to do this I will do it my way. I committed to making the experience more important than the wins and losses. Don’t get me wrong nobody wants to win more than the head coach does. However, if I based happiness on W’s then I would be losing even when we were winning because there is always something we can improve on. This commitment has been hard and everyday I remind myself about the commitment I made to me. Each day I make the recommitment to improve. I encourage you to sit down as a family and talk about your commitments and develop a plan of attack on how your family can support each other through them.

Word of the Week: DETAILS
I sincerely hope this message finds you and your family doing well. We had a taste of spring this weekend and boy did it feel good. Unfortunately, winter is not done with us and I have a feeling it will have its way about mid week. Needless to say March is on the doorstep and spring athletics are just around the corner. This past week we concluded our winter performance training and I want to congratulate all of our guys who made the commitment to become a better version of themselves. 13 weeks 60 sessions and over 100 hours of opportunities to invest, lead and be selfless. Needless to say our guys did not disappoint. Not only did they buy into their own personal process, but they wrote the first chapter in this year’s process. I have a feeling it will be a great story to tell.
COMPETITIVE EXCELLENCE
Our program is built on competitive excellence in all that we do. These sessions are more than just weight lifting. Each set, each rep is a chance to compete against your teammates and more importantly yourself. We must first learn how to compete against ourselves before we can ever introduce another team. Our quarter 1 of training is the foundation for each individual in our program, it is their chance to place the pillars that the entire year will be built upon.
With all of this we run a friendly competition between our two groups of RAM’S and CHEETAH’S. Our Ram’s are most typically our linemen, while the Cheetah’s are the skill players. Every week the players have a chance to earn points by living our Iron Star values. It’s an opportunity to show that you can be trusted to be accountable, selfless, invested and prepared..it is a chance to own your 20 square feet and LEAD! I am proud to stay that we had a battle on our hands every week. Alas, we have a winner and I am proud to announce that the 2020 Winter Iron Star Challenge winner is the….
I want to congratulate these young men for earning the right to be champions. In my opinion we must compete. In life, just like the playing field, there will be winners and losers and I want our Stars to see the value in being ELITE. These boys will each receive a gift from the program . Their attention to detail was impeccable and the leadership was exemplary.
DETAILS
This leads me to our word of the week. This week I chose the word detail. Now I am sure someone is probably saying “if you are so detailed you should have checked your grammar or spelling better in this newsletter.” LOL . In all seriousness, executing simple details can make huge impacts in a program or conversely have huge consequences. The Marines have a saying
“The little things take care of the big things.”
Accomplishing a mission becomes nearly impossible when we lose focus of the details. In the St. Charles North football program we strive to be a program built by design with an elite level of detail to everything we do. Too often, leaders focus on the details only when the mistakes have been made and the consequences have been paid. I liken it to a traffic ticket, we all become much better drivers after the ticket because we are now focusing on the details of the rules of the road.
The details allow us to stay consistent in our approach and elicit growth. Our leadership program was talking about goal setting and how to develop action plans to accomplish them. Most players said they want to win a conference championship or a state championship. This is great ! We want our kids to want to achieve elite levels of success. However, you can’t go from 1 to 100 without counting 2-99. Details allow us to stack growth on top of each other and before we know it we are a whole lot better. The ideology of 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1=10 is a mantra that I buy into as a person. We must change our best on a daily basis in order to improve. It’s about being 1% better than you were yesterday. This is HARD… really really HARD because the human brain is built to conserve energy and protect the body from over exertion. We are built to stay safe and comfortable. In the St. Charles North Football program we are asking every key stakeholder in our program to have a growth mindset. In order to do this we must focus on details. EVERYTHING MATTERS!
Each and every one of us has to take ownership of this ideology. It can be done…if we do it together. I encourage you to have a discussion this week with your son on the level of detail they put into their daily lives. Most of the time we put the attention into the parts of our lives that we most enjoy. We probably enjoy them the most because we put the most detailed and critical thinking into it. Funny how that works!

Word of the Week:Role
The gray skies and cold is a constant reminder that I prefer summer to winter. The dog days of February can make even the strongest person look ahead. As we close out quarter 1 of our off season I encourage us all to finish this quarter off the way we want to start quarter 2. Being a North Star is about making the right decision even when it is hard. For those new to our 4 quarter program please allow me to fill in some of the blanks. We break our yearly program into 4 quarters, very much like a fiscal business year. Each quarter is designed to yield specific returns on investment. For example, quarter 1 is focused around the following
Quarter 1 Nov-Feb
- Soft tissue recovery from season
- End of year player meetings
- Player goals and benchmarks
- College Recruiting
- Initial fitness testing
- Winter Performance Cycle
- Lift a thon
I am very proud to say that we have hit all benchmarks for quarter 1 . The players, parents and staff have worked extremely hard to keep our program in the forefront and our culture strengthening. We each have a role to play in this program and if we can share in a simple mission of creating an ELITE experience we can achieve all that we set out to do.
In quarter 2 we add the development of both the technical and mental aspects of the game. Leadership academy has commenced and our players are beginning to look into their roles on this year’s teams. Open gym and film opportunities will be added to our weekly agenda. The ultimate goal is to teach the game of football. Players will have chances to work on their skill sets, as well as, do positional studies. Performance training begins in early March and will run for 12 weeks. A similar format will be available and players will again be training off site at Legacy Performance once a week. A subtle shift from weight room to speed application will begin to take place. A focus on linear speed and technique will be made. As you can see there are always opportunities to be involved within our program.
Our word of the week is “Role(s)” . As in what is yours, mine, ours within the SCN Football program? I chose role(s) because in any team or family dynamic we must serve a multitude of services in order to maintain the homeostasis of the group.
As the leader of the program it is imperative that I communicate our roles to each member of our organization. As parents, players and staff we all play a critical role in the development of our program. Culture is dynamic, it lives and breathes by the day to day actions of those within the culture. A program’s culture must be fought for every minute of every day. It is an extremely difficult endeavor and impossible to do alone. Unfortunately, there are times when the role we are asked to play does not equate to the vision we have set for ourselves. It is important to set your goals high but equally as important to understand the process of how you can achieve them.
People often ask me what the “Process” is and how does it work? For one , I did not make it up. It is “borrowed” from Nick Saban at Alabama. However, I do believe in what it stands for. In all honesty, the process is different for everyone. We all have different roles, circumstance and adversities that we must negotiate through. In my opinion the process is the self discovery that entails as we serve in these varying roles.
At St. Charles North Football we have a saying “be the best fry guy”. Simply put we tell the story of a young man at a local fast food joint and his rise through the corporation. He starts as the fry cook and in only 3 weeks the customers start talking about how great the french fries taste. So impressed his boss promotes him to line cook. Well no sooner do the customers start raving about the food coming off the line. Fast forward 2 years and the “fry guy” now owns his own franchise and becomes a multimillionaire. All of this because he took his role and did his very best with it.
In our program not everyone will score the touchdowns and get their name in the papers. In fact, far more of us will not but that should not change our effort within our role. As an Iron Star we must perform our role with an elite level of detail. As a teammate we must take care of our fellow teammates. That means we must make every decision not with wants and desires as the priority, but with the teams best interests at heart. This is the ultimate in selfless motivation. When we care more about the WE than we do the ME great things can happen. Be your best you this week in whatever your role is!

SUMMER CAMP LIST
This year we will have the usual camps listed below .
*June 1st- 4th is designated for youth and individual skills camps.
* We have added a new camp opportunity. June 6th – July 30th we will be running a separate strength & conditioning class. Bryce Biel of Legacy Performance and his staff along with our Staff will be running a 75 minute strength & speed session M-R. Camp times will vary from June to July. The availability of this camp will allow us to separate our football and strength development. While this is an extra cost, the development to the athlete is well worth it in my opinion. Prices have yet to be released but I can assure you it will come down to less than 10 dollars a session which is well below Bryce’s usual cost. We took this step as the logical progression in our program’s development. We have always felt that our strength development conflicted with our football development in the summer. This will alleviate that problem. Additionally, we start official football camp on June 22nd. From June 1st – June 18th we will be having OTA (organized team activities) film and scheme sessions from 6pm – 8pm. These are non padded classroom based sessions. A full curriculum is being developed to better prepare our athletes cognitively for the summer installs. Again we feel this aligns more consistently with our 4 quadrant development model. There will not be a camp sign up as these opportunities are free of charge.
