Coach’s Message

12.12-12.17

Star’s Football Family-

A Happy final week of the semester to all. A long road traveled and a huge accomplishment. . As we close in on this final week of the semester it can be a stressful time for our student-athletes. The 17-week climb is coming to an apex and for some and grades may hang in the balance. My message for this week focuses on compassion. While compassion for others is the spirit of the holidays, I would like to focus on self-compassion.  In our program, we talk about leadership starting by owning our 20 square feet. That often begins with how we treat ourselves. In life, it is so easy to treat others better than we treat ourselves. This week I am asking our players to do the following:

SELF-COMPASSION

Give yourself the same kindness that you would afford others.

When faced with difficult life struggles, or confronting personal mistakes, failures, and inadequacies, self-compassion responds with kindness rather than harsh self-judgment, recognizing that imperfection is part of the shared human experience.

In St. Charles North football I want our players to recognize the importance of one of the most important relationships that we will ever have. The relationship with ourselves. This can be difficult in this modern age with so many seeking approval or likes from complete strangers on social media. I stress the importance of finding your value not based on others’ opinions of you but your personal effort in your journey. This week as our student-athletes tackle finals for the first time in 2 years I am hoping that we can all rally around them and give them the support they need. Let us remind them that they are enough and they have the power to persevere!

KEEP CLIMBIN’

WINTER OFFSEASON UP-DATE

This week our Elite Leader was Abel Anell. My hat goes off to this young man. I have had the privilege of getting to know Abel much better this past off-season. Let me tell you, he is as mature of a leader as I have come across. Abel understands the values of Iron Star Football. Not only does he understand but he elevates them. A brother of 4 siblings Abel wears many hats and does so without any hesitation. On the field, Abel’s selflessness shines through as he played 5 different positions for the sophomores this past season.  During this off-season, Abel has stepped into a leadership role that cannot be denied. He brings others up and shares his path with anyone who is willing to put in the work. With players like Abel, this program is going to do great things.

Switching gears, the entire program has made huge strides these past 4 weeks of training. The boys have shown a consistent commitment to each other. Attendance has been fantastic with weekly attendance above 85% as a program. This past week was our first week using our 5 rep max numbers to guide our training and by the looks of it our boys hit their numbers and did it with a smile on their face. I want to thank all of you for allowing me to work with your children. The time in the weight room is special and probably one of the favorite parts of my job.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP

I want to thank our players and families who gave their time this Sunday to help sort toys for the Toys-for -Tots campaign. It was a great time and a fun way to get into the holiday spirit.

BANQUET & 4TH PHASE

Another Thanks goes out to our parent group for putting together one of the most memorable banquets we have had. The auditorium was looking great and the amount of time our parents put in is truly humbling. A special thank you goes out to Tricia Sharkey. Trish will be leaving our position as parent group leader at the end of the year and I could not be more grateful for her contributions. Running our parent group is difficult and running 2 seasons in one year is unheard of but Trish did so without hesitation. She not only handled everything thrown her way but made this program better.  We grew close over these past 15 months and I felt that not only was Trish an asset to our program but she became a great friend. THANK YOU TRISH!  This program owes this year to you!

JOURNEY VS DESTINATION

As we embark on this winter off-season, I want to stress the importance of focusing not just on the destination we are striving to achieve. Getting to the top of the mountain is a great goal, but to make this a reality, we must first embrace the journey we are about to take. The day-to-day climb will feed our souls and build the behaviors that we will need to reach the destination. Focusing on a destination is not a terrible thing to do but often it is just a point on a map and it offers no benefits until the destination is reached. On the flip side, when we focus on the journey we can appreciate each small step that we take in preparation for reaching the destination.

Finally, our communication loop must be clear, concise, and accurate.  Please take the time to read emails, newsletters and check our website www.scn4thphase.org As always, if you have any questions please reach out to any of our group leaders
