Star’s Football Family-

It is hard to believe that it has been almost 2 years since we have had the opportunity to play fall football! The Friday night lights, the crisp autumn air, and the sound of the fans stomping their feet on the bleachers right before our kids storm the field in unity! Man, I get goosebumps just thinking about it. As I write this newsletter we are on the eve of the 2021 season 2.0. However, this feels different. It feels right and normal. In an era of abnormality, I personally have found myself gravitating to the comfort of normal.  While we cannot guarantee that this year will not have its own set of challenges and hurdles, I am confident that our program will continue to maintain its standard of excellence and provide our student-athletes with an ELITE experience.

For our new parents and players, this newsletter is a small glimpse into our program. I hope you enjoy the content and find it valuable.

The final week of our summer camp was an absolute blast our SCN Staycation was a hit and a million thanks need to go out to our parent group and more specifically Tricia Sharkey and Lance Erickson. Without their support, we would not have been able to give our kids such a special moment. It was humbling to see our parents at NIU tailgating for a practice. It was selfless of our parents to donate so much water, chips, cookies, etc for our pool party at Otter Cove. Like we always talk about our program is not just the players it is so much more! It is parents, players, staff, and the community that surrounds us all sharing the same mission, vision, and values.

IRON STAR VALUE

During our last week of camp, the Sharknados gave us a great presentation on the importance of Investment. We dug deep on ROI (return on investment) and how sometimes you will lose a little to gain a lot. I was so impressed with the thought and care that the platoon showed in presenting our key values. I hope the players got the message.

EARN YOUR STRIPES UPDATE

The final numbers are in and while the race was close one platoon stood out amongst the rest. Congratulations to Big Baller Brand and platoon leader Carson Kuligowski. BBB is the 2021 Platoon Challenge Champions and will have their warm-up paid for. Carson did a fantastic job of leading his teammates to victory. It goes to show that if you have a plan and a group of people willing to take action, great things happen.

THIS WEEKS PLAN

*

  • Aug 11th Fall ‘21 Fundraiser Begins
  • Every year our program is allowed 1 fundraiser that will provide the financial support for the program for 1 calendar year. This Wednesday we will be kicking off our annual card sale fundraiser. This year all sales will be contactless and a useful app will allow players to keep track of sales and stay on pace with program expectations. While I understand that this can be a nuisance for some. The importance of this sale can not be overstated. All players are expected to sell 20 cards to friends, family, and the community. There will be incentives at the 10/15 and 20+ mark that I am sure the kids will want. Please sit down with your son or daughter and talk about THEIR plan for selling cards. I stress THEIR because part of this experience is to provide them with an opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and work on their communication skills. Open donations can be made and if your family, business, or friends would like to do a straight contribution to the program please have them write a check to SCNFB 2616 c/o Rob Pomazak. If anyone is interested in making a sizable donation or has a specific item they would like to donate please contact Coach Pomazak via email

Coach’s Message

7.25-7.31

Star’s Football Family-

Happy weekend to all, I hope your family gets chance to enjoy some time together.  This was extremely busy for our Stars football family. All the key stakeholders were hard at work. The season is just around the corner and you can already feel the anticipation building. As usual, I will give you some of the highlights, low lights, and happenings for our Stars.

This week we held two of our favorite summer program events. Normally, our summer youth camp and selfless service week are not held simultaneously. However, due to the new “post covid” summer schedule, we decided to team these two opportunities up and the results were amazing! We had over 125 2nd -8th graders in attendance for our 4-day youth camp. These future Stars brought the juice each and every day. Our platoons each took a day to help lead the program. I was continually impressed with our players and there ability to connect with the kids. The goal is to give them an experience that drives home our servant leadership philosophy while giving our youth an ELITE camp that helps to build the Northstar culture. Mission accomplished and a heart felt thank you to all who helped to make this possible.

IRON STAR VALUE OF THE WEEK

Selflessness was our value of the week and a tip of the cap to Goodfellas on their fantastic presentation. Led by Joe Curzon, Goodfellas did a great job of highlight what selflessness sounds, looks and feels like. One take away we dug into was the “We before Me” philosophy. The boys made the connection that all great teams have 3 things

  1. Unselfish play
  2. Trust and connection
  3. Relentless effort

I found this to be a great jumping off point for a deeper dive into positions and how each player should be open to moving positions to better the team. It will take selfless decisions like that for our Stars to reach their fullest potential.

EARN YOUR STRIPES UPDATE

The race is heating up as we enter our final week a champion will be crowned. Big Baller Brand is still in the lead but only 80 points separate the top from the bottom. As we enter the final push the campers will see our platoon challenge shift to daily tactical training drills. Platoons will be ask to perform maneuvers and task in unison and on command. The ability to follow directives with precision and efficiency is a foundational element to the game of football.

We also have seen our first group of players eclipse the 50 point total! These young men will get their strip for their helmet. There is always a sense of pride when the players get thier strips. Its a badge of honor to wear the blue, black and silver strip and our players appreciate the legacy.

UPDATE CHALLENGE

SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Our Stars have been out and about in the community completing their service learning projects. It is always so much fun to see what each platoon comes up with. It is humbling to see how willing our players are to help others. The goal of the project is to build collaborative planning skills. This is a project that our players must brainstorm, plan and execute on their own without coaches help. We want our players to be able to problem solve without the coaches intervening. On the football field, the best teams have players who can adjust and modify on the fly, often in the heat of the moment without coaches directing them. Again, everything we do as a program has a bigger picture, every moment can be used to build the behaviors that win.

JOURNEY VS DESTINATION

As we embark on this new season, I want to stress the importance of focusing not just on the destination we are striving to achieve. Getting to the top of the mountain is a great goal, but to make this a reality, we must first embrace the journey we are about to take. The day-to-day climb will feed our souls and build the behaviors that we will need to reach the destination. Focusing on a destination is not a terrible thing to do but often it is just a point on a map and it offers no benefits until the destination is reached. On the flip side, when we focus on the journey we can appreciate each small step that we take in preparation for reaching the destination.

ESSENTIAL

In our preparation paradigm summer camp is the unofficial start to our season. While no camps are mandatory, our player’s attendance is an essential part of their development. With limited time, each day is a highly choreographed production with finite goals attached to each learning opportunity. Absences are expected, but players are encouraged to keep up online with all installs as a part of our accountability value. Again, our goal is to provide an ELITE experience for all participants. Lack of accountability or preparation on the player’s part will inhibit that experience. I say this not to scare anyone but to simply be transparent in our expectations and standards.

Finally, our communication loop must be clear, concise, and accurate.  Please take the time to read emails, newsletters and check our website www.scn4thphase.org As always, if you have any questions please reach out to any of our group leaders

The next steps

As we close out camp this week, I want to shed some light on the beginning of the season plan. Below are some important dates and notes for your reference. A complete summer schedule will be coming out by August 4th.

THIS WEEK PLAN

      • Var @ Willlowbrook Team Camp

    • 7/30
      • NO FROSH CAMP
      • VAR/SOPH CAMP 7-10PM

In a normal year the varsity camp culminates with an overnight trip to NIU. Unfortunately, covid has put a temporary halt to this trip. While we are extremely disappointed that we cannot give our players this opportunity, our program does not dwell on what we don’t have. Instead we focus on solutions and an unwavering commitment to our mission. Starting on Wednesday our varsity will be having the first annual “SCN Football StayCatioN! Each day we will have unique opportunities for our varsity players both on and off the field. The goal of the staycation is to complete this phase of our team development plan, account for what we learned and then plan for the next phase of our journey. I will be sending a specific itinerary early this week. Finally, I do not normally ask but in our world this experience has been invaluable to our over all success as a team. If your son or daughter can prioritize these events and attend as if they were overnight with the team it would be appreciated.

Star’s Football Family-

Hoping you had a happy 4th of July and got to spend some time with your family. It is always a special time for me personally, I truly appreciate the hot summer nights when I keep my daughters up way too late for all the right reasons. Memories of bbq, fireworks, and catching fireflies will fuel the soul through the many long hours that are ahead.

Star’s Football Family-

WE DID IT! A year to remember but now I am asking for us to forget. (lol) As the leader of this program, it is my job to lay out our mission in very clear terms. Keeping our long-term vision in focus is paramount to our overall success. Defining our shared purpose will be the foundation that all decisions are made. With that said, take a deep breath… hold it for 5 seconds… now exhale slowly.  Open your eyes and realized that last year is over and nobody will care what we did, how we did it or how successful we were. Football is a what have you done for me lately profession and its our time as the key stakeholders of this program to align our beliefs and behaviors and begin to create the experiences that will lead us back up the mountain.

With all that said the first order of business for ALL parents and players is to prepare for the summer. Summer camp registration is open and we need ALL potential players to sign up for 2 camps per level

  • Camp 1 June: Sports performance camp
    • Players will begin an extensive training regime design to build their physical, tactical, and technical strength skills.
    • Due to Covid, we have missed 2 lifting cycles and we are committed to not missing this session
    • Each level will be led by a certified strength and conditioning coach

– Camp 2: Team Camp

– Team camp is the more typical football camp that we have run in previous years.

– Team scheme, skill, and continued sports performance will take place.

As always if cost is an issue please contact Coach Pomazak

Those who opt-out of camps cannot be held against you because all camps are voluntary, but in real terms, it will put players behind in all 4 quadrants of their development. In the end, we are a program built around exceptional player development, and not having those opportunities will only be a detriment to the player.

Finally, our communication loop must be clear, concise, and accurate.  Please take the time to read emails, newsletters and check our website www.scn4thphase.org As always, if you have any questions please reach out to any of our group leaders

We did it! A heartfelt thank you to all who attended the banquet this weekend. A great effort by parents, players, and staff made it a special morning for our program.  As we send our seniors off into their final week of graduation we wish them well.  As it goes, when one group exits a new group of North Stars now take the stage as the leaders of the program. As we move into the shortest off-season in the history of the IHSA it is going to be imperative that we keep our ELITE efforts going. The goal is to always provide clear, concise, and accurate information to you weekly.
