ST. CHARLES NORTH NORTH STAR FOOTBALL

WEEKLY JOURNAL

8.10-8.17

Star’s –

I hope your family is doing well and enjoying these last few weeks  of summer. As we move into August our program will reintroduce our weekly newsletter. The goal is to keep us connected as a football family. Each week I will start with a quick coaches message and then highlight the ongoings for the program during that specific week. As a parent, player or team supporter you are a key stakeholder in our program. We need every one of you in order to fulfill our program mission , vision and purpose.

Coach’s Message

This past week the unthinkable happened. Our season was moved to the spring. Honestly, I saw it coming and tried to prepare myself and our program for this moment. I feel as the leader it is  imperative to show our kids that no matter what happens we will be okay.  Is it ideal? No? Is it going to be hard? Yes ! Is there a guarantee that we will play in the spring? No. Hard questions for anyone to have to answer but it is our reality.  We teach our players a simple rule that when adversity strikes our response will help to determine the outcome. Needless to say, our program has responded. Our players have shown their resilience and willingness to press on. Our parents have banned together and rallied around our kids. It has been humbling to say the least.  As I watch this unfold I am constantly reminded of one word FAMILY. No, not the family that you live with but our football family. The love, care and support that you have shown for each other is proof positive that our mission, vision and purpose is alive and well. It also reinforces how each player, coach, parent and administrator has a hand in our program’s culture. As the school year begins to start (remotely, blended, in person I am not sure which it is at this point) let us all lean on one another. A group with a shared belief is unstoppable. Let’s share the belief that things will get better, we will play football and the best is yet to come.

WEEKLY JOURNAL

June 28th-July4th

Stars family,

I hope this message finds you well.  As we move into the 4th of July holiday, I want to take a moment to reflect on the past month.  While it certainly  was not ideal the virtual experience that our staff and players created was nothing short of amazing. I want to commend our players for the time and effort they put into the meetings. They brought a “move the needle” growth mindset to every session. There were some highs and lows but the opportunity to get to know our players better was worth it. In short, these kids have responded!

E+R=O

Speaking of response. In the North Star Football program we spend a great deal of time talking, learning and reflecting on the importance of a positive mindset.   Adversity is no stranger to any of us and in the game of football it is a guarantee.  It is within these moments of adversity, when we lack control that we must fall back on our training and respond in a manner that will bring us closer to the desired outcome.  We use a simple equation of e+r = o to help support our learning.

Event + Response = Outcome

The  events that we have been faced with these past few months  have been life changing.  It has taken everything that I once knew as normal and turned it all upside down . To be honest, it has been a major challenge for me.  But through it all I have focused on one thing and that has been my response .   We do not have a choice as to when adversity will strike but we certainly do have control over how we respond.   I have chosen to be grateful for the extra time with my kids. I have chosen to be thankful for the opportunities I have had to connect with our players.  I try to find moments of joy each day.  It has been a conscious decision and not always easy. It is a discipline that I have yet to master but as each event comes up I see it as a chance to get better. “Bring it on!”

The reason I write all of this is because none of us know what the future holds.  As we eagerly await the IHSA return to play protocols we must focus on being patient and understanding. The administrations of D303, IDHP and IHSA want to see our athletes back on the field but never at the risk of their personal health.  There is no guarantee of a season in the fall. That is hard to even fathom. However, in those moments of doubt we can focus on remaining positive. We cannot control what happens but we can control our own actions. I have asked our players each day we meet to “move the needle” . Move your personal needle forward each and every day.  We talk about putting our head down and not worrying about anything but moving the needle. When the decision comes for the season, we will be ready.

WEEKLY JOURNAL

June 7th- June 13th

Stars family,

I want to thank everyone for attending the player / parent meeting last Monday. We had over 150 people in attendance !  I am so proud and feel so privileged to be a part of this football family. Our young men and women have shown their Iron Star will over the first week of virtual camp. Their attention and participation each day has proven to me that we will be a better program coming out of this than before  we went in.

F.A.M.I.L.Y

I do believe it is important for our program to take a moment to touch upon the current state of our country.   I struggle to find adequate words to describe the outrage that I feel towards the treatment and injustic of our fellow citizens.  As the leader of this program and member of our community my stance will and always has been to coach to our players hearts regardless of race, color or religion. I want to listen and learn on how I can better support all of our players.  As a father it is paramount  that I teach my daughters right from wrong and that we are all brothers and sisters of this world. I want our future leaders to see that change is possible and that we all have a voice and can make change happen. If anyone needs support or wants to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me.

ACCOUNTABILITY

This coming week is dedicated to our tenant of Accountability. In our world we describe being accountable as taking action.  I find it appropriate right now to encourage our players to “take action”. In our world we talk about doing what’s right all of the time not just when it is convenient to you. Staying  committed long after the initial desire has left you. I encourage you to discuss this value with your son or daughter and help support them to develop the accountability that our program needs to be successful.  Each week one of our 8 platoons will be assigned to a presentation dedicated to the value of the week. This week the Average Joe’s will grace us with their version of Accountability, I cannot wait.
