Star’s Football Family-

I sincerely hope this message finds your family in good health and spirits.  Fall has hit like a ton of bricks and with each passing day we can feel the impending guarantee that winter will not miss us.  Hard to believe that if we were playing we would be nearing the end of our regular season.  As I look across the country at the states who have continued to play I feel a sense of disappointment that our boys and girls are not getting that experience. However, I also feel a tremendous sense of excitement that we still have our entire season in front of us! I try to keep reminding our team that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. We have built this program on the foundation that our response will determine the outcome. This year has tested our culture to its very end. I am so proud to say that our players, parents and staff have shown that they will not go down easily. Our persistence is greater than any resistance. The investment, preparation and leadership that I see each and every day on the football field is proof positive that it is not the head coach who makes the program but every person who is connected to it.  You.. yes you! Each of us have a stake in this program and together we can make a difference. Once again, a group of people with a shared belief is an unstoppable force.  Alone we are just a drop of water in the bucket but together we are a tsunami able to move mountains and find the path to a brighter future. 

What’s your why? 

I pose this question to every player and coach in our program. It’s an odd question, vague at best. However, it is an essential pillar in our journey throughout life. It can be interpreted many different ways but at the core it is about searching for your purpose. So many of us say we know our why but we never articulate it.  I usually clarify to our kids. 

Why do you play football? 

Why do you put so much effort and time in? 

Why do you work so hard with no guarantee of success? 

Why do you take the risk ? 

Why? 

I then follow up that I do not have the answer. I have “my” answer but they need to find “their” answer.  In any successful organization you will have values and behaviors that need to be supported but beneath that you must have a group of people who understand their mission, vision and purpose.  We all should have a personal attachment to the overall goal. I encourage your family to sit down and talk about why your son or daughter plays football. I am always enlightened by the responses.

Coach’s Message

Star’s Football Family-

Autumn is in full swing and since this is my first fall without football in 20 years my wife has taken advantage of having a full time husband back in the picture. We have done the apple picking, carved pumpkins and even did a “color tour”! I honestly did not know that there was such a thing as a color tour but apparently it is a  BIG deal. Needless to say, I miss football more each and every day.  I was fortunate this past weekend to get away to Michigan.  On Friday night, I did like any coach who is not playing football and found the nearest field to watch a game. The game itself was not too thrilling with 2 wing t offenses running option but I found myself overtaken by the emotions of the moment. The smells, sounds and energy at the stadium radiated into every cell of my body.  I soaked it in to say the least.  It reminded me of what we are fighting for and how amazing it will be when we get to play our 1st snap! We all have a choice right now, I will say that our program will continue to stay positive. We will continue to hold the program to elite standards. The mission, vision and purpose is being tested but this resistance will never defeat our persistence. Guided by the most dedicated group of kids I have ever been with we cannot lose! 

Preparation 

This past week we focused on our value of “Preparation”.   In St. Charles North football we pride ourselves on our ability to create a game plan, teach it , learn it then execute it. This requires an elite commitment to preparation that each player and coach must adhere to. During these fall contact days preparation can be found in many different areas. Studying the playbook, dressing appropriately for camp, not forgetting your mask and film review all take a level of preparation that is not common for the average kid. As I said before, in my 20 years I have never had a more dedicated group. They bring their best daily! The standard is the standard and each of us have skin in the game. I want to thank our players and parents for making our culture so special.

Star’s Football Family-

Hard to believe that October is here! During the football season, this is when things really start to get fun. Conference championships get decided and if you’re good enough, you may earn the right to punch your ticket into the playoffs. Making the high school playoffs is one of the program’s goals at the beginning of every year. We continually remind our players that we are fighting for 1 more day together. We want to be playing when there are no leaves on the tree. To earn 1 of the 32 slots in 7A is a badge of accomplishment that I want every player in our program to experience.  Unfortunately, last year was the first time in a long while that we did not qualify for the postseason. There was a collective letdown and disappointment that we all felt.  Our program has held on to that feeling and the team has used it as daily motivation ever since.  For over 10 months the team has prepared for their moment. Despite all of the hurdles and moving goalposts, they have kept their eyes on the prize. Never, have I heard them complain. Never, have I had them ask “why us?”  Over the past few weeks, I have spent many-a-walks thinking about this whole ordeal. The resiliency our kids have shown is truly amazing. I do believe there is a lesson to learn be in all of this but I also believe our kids do not deserve such a harsh teacher.  Our kids are ready to leave their legacy when the opportunity presents itself. I cannot wait to see what they can accomplish! 

Investment

This past weekend our kids made a commitment to volunteer their time to the i9 flag football league. Over 40 players of all levels invested part of their Saturday to come to serve others. I have to admit that nothing makes me prouder than seeing our athletes out supporting the youth. The team did a great job of engaging not only the kids but the parents as well. It always humbles me to see how the little kids look up to our players. They are like rock stars and I feel it’s well deserved. Our players are special and they continue to make an impact on this community away from the field. I want to say thank you to all of our players who continue to live our value of “Investment” and give their most valuable commodity… Time!

Star’s Football Family-

My apologies for getting the newsletter out a little late. I hope your family is well and enjoying the first glimpses of fall. Fall has always been my favorite season for many reasons. Something about the crisp air and smell of leaves that conjures up many fond memories I have from this time of year. Unfortunately, this year we are missing something we all love. The laughs, tears, and roller coaster of emotions that football brings have been put on hold. In its place are uncertainties, inconsistencies, and political rhetoric that no high schooler should have to endure. For the past month, our coaches association has been working hard to establish our movement to have the fall season reinstated. This weekend saw thousands of parents and athletes rally to support the Let Us Play movement. I want to thank those who have taken the time to lead the charge. I appreciate the energy, commitment, and emotional resources that you have invested to keep pushing forward.  

As the leader of our program, I share in your vision of a brighter future. I want to see our players out on the field. I want to see our helmets held high and hear the roar of the crowd! We are in this together and together we can navigate our kids through this. 

I have to admit there is much to think about but I continue to focus on the essentials. That is YOU! It is the mission of our program to provide our families with a great experience. I have repeatedly had to remind myself to

When you can. 

In a world where it is easy to focus on what we do not have,  I choose to focus on what we do have and what we can accomplish. Right now we can have contact days. In order to do this, we have to establish the safest environment we can each and every day. This requires a level of preparation and accountability by all of us to do our part.  We have over 110 players who are investing time each week into their personal development. They come with a passion and energy that uplifts everyone on the field.  We have coaches and players who are volunteering their time to help build their team. It is humbling to see such selflessness on display. Finally, we have parents who are leading their families through very difficult times with grace and dignity. They have supported our program and I am eternally grateful. In short, there is so much to be thankful for. I know that for some this is of little consolation, but it has to be highlighted.
