Star’s Football Family-

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

I want to take this opportunity to express my hope that you get a moment to relax and enjoy a special time with your family this week.  I know this year we have seen ALOT of our families but it is always a little more special on the holidays.  As we continue to navigate through 2020’s unrelenting onslaught of uncertainty, I want to express my gratitude to all of you.  Your support and encouragement throughout this ordeal have been a wonderful representation of what being an Iron Star is all about.

In our program, we live by our credo of “Iron Star Football”.  The Iron Star was developed by our 2013 team and my 1st team as a head coach. It was created to serve as our guiding light for the behaviors we will support and develop within our program.  Each and every day the message of the program is built around these pillars of behavior.

As we enter this new phase of this journey, there is a level of belief that we all need to have. Sometimes we have to believe even when the odds are against us. As we say:

“A group of people with a shared belief  can become an unstoppable force. Belief is a force multiplier…an ignitor”

When the chips are down we need to fall back on the values that make us who are we. We can all find a way to make our Iron Star values applicable to our lives.  Stay strong, have a purpose, and share your light.

The Plan

In the coming weeks, our parent group 4th Phase and Cover 4 Hospitality Group will begin moving forward with the plans for our 2021 spring campaign. While there is a lot that still remains unclear, we will be working to create an ELITE experience for all parents, players, and community members. Please be on the lookout for correspondences coming from both groups in the near future. It takes a village to run this football program and we will be calling on all of you to come and be a part of the mission, vision, and purpose.  If you are interested in being on a committee please contact Trisha Sharkey at tshark3@gmail.com .

Star’s Football Family-

Another week in and another week of great successes for our kids. Day in and in day out our young men and women continue to live our Iron Star virtues. I speak to many other head coaches throughout the week and I have to say the level of investment, accountability, and selflessness of our Stars is NOT common. Our kids love this game and their enthusiasm is infectious. I can honestly say I love them all like my son our daughters. Their experience is my top priority and I can only hope that they are enjoying this as much as I am. I keep telling our players that at some point we will be the only ones playing and every other state will be wishing they were us. To get to spend these last 20 days with our kids has been the highlight of what has been a difficult year.

Memories

This past week I had to say goodbye to one of my closest friends, possibly the closest. He was a neighborhood buddy who moved in down the block in 6th grade. Basically, from the moment I met him at the bus stop on the first day of school, we were inseparable. Throughout the years we shared in the good, bad, and indifferent of each other’s life.  In high school, we would spend hours on the football field playing for a fairly poor team. Even though we didn’t win many the time we spent together and the memories we made are priceless. He had my back and I had his.  To this day there is nobody I would rather have by my side when the chips are down. As the years went on, life took over. Between kids, jobs, and everything else it can be hard to stay in touch.  While we didn’t see each other as much we still kept in touch. I always appreciated the opportunity to connect with somebody who knew me back then. He knew where I came from and understood the mindset because in our neighborhood you had to have it.  It was never awkward, it was just picked up from wherever we left off. At his funeral, they had our old football helmet out on display.  Seeing that helmet for the first time in 25 years hit my like a ton of bricks and made me realize that the reason I coach is to provide our kids with the same great memories that I have. I will never get to hear his laugh again and I feel with his passing a part of me has gone with him.

I write this is because it is a perfect example of the importance of this moment in time for our kids. There will be a time when the cleats are hung up and all that is left are memories and friendships. Years will pass and lives will change but in those precious moments when you see your old friends the memories you share will become the fabric of your lives. During this tough time when we have so many reasons to stop believing and throw in the towel, my sole motivation has been to continue to stay true to our program’s mission, vision, and purpose. It is my NORTHSTAR! It is my guiding light!

Star’s Football Family-

I sincerely hope this message finds your family in good health and spirits.  Fall has hit like a ton of bricks and with each passing day we can feel the impending guarantee that winter will not miss us.  Hard to believe that if we were playing we would be nearing the end of our regular season.  As I look across the country at the states who have continued to play I feel a sense of disappointment that our boys and girls are not getting that experience. However, I also feel a tremendous sense of excitement that we still have our entire season in front of us! I try to keep reminding our team that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. We have built this program on the foundation that our response will determine the outcome. This year has tested our culture to its very end. I am so proud to say that our players, parents and staff have shown that they will not go down easily. Our persistence is greater than any resistance. The investment, preparation and leadership that I see each and every day on the football field is proof positive that it is not the head coach who makes the program but every person who is connected to it.  You.. yes you! Each of us have a stake in this program and together we can make a difference. Once again, a group of people with a shared belief is an unstoppable force.  Alone we are just a drop of water in the bucket but together we are a tsunami able to move mountains and find the path to a brighter future.

What’s your why?

I pose this question to every player and coach in our program. It’s an odd question, vague at best. However, it is an essential pillar in our journey throughout life. It can be interpreted many different ways but at the core it is about searching for your purpose. So many of us say we know our why but we never articulate it.  I usually clarify to our kids.

Why do you play football?

Why do you put so much effort and time in?

Why do you work so hard with no guarantee of success?

Why do you take the risk ?

Why?

I then follow up that I do not have the answer. I have “my” answer but they need to find “their” answer.  In any successful organization you will have values and behaviors that need to be supported but beneath that you must have a group of people who understand their mission, vision and purpose.  We all should have a personal attachment to the overall goal. I encourage your family to sit down and talk about why your son or daughter plays football. I am always enlightened by the responses.

Congratulations
